Healing, Creation, and Purpose Through Art

My journey began long before Katso Recycle Corner existed. I grew up in an environment where domestic violence, alcohol abuse, crime and broken families were often normalised. Those experiences shaped how I viewed brokenness—not only in people, but in the world around me.

Moving to Cape Town to work in the wine industry completely shifted my perspective. Working for Spier introduced me to sustainability in a way I had never experienced before. During COVID-19, we visited a landfill site. Seeing where our waste actually ends up and watching people sort through what society throws away was a deeply emotional experience. It made me realise that waste never truly disappears; someone always carries the responsibility of dealing with it.

That experience reminded me of how easily society discards both materials and people.

Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of working with respected wine brands that take sustainability seriously. Those experiences strengthened my belief that protecting our environment begins with changing the way we think.

Katso Recycle Corner was born from that conviction.

I understand that changing people's behaviour takes time. That is why our programmes begin by changing perspectives through creativity. Every workshop is designed to encourage people to see beauty where others see waste, possibility where others see limitation, and hope where others see brokenness.

The restoration of materials becomes a reflection of the restoration we all need within ourselves. Every restored object becomes a reminder that second chances are possible—for materials, for communities and for people.
