Lessons From a Community Art Day

Last Saturday, a group of young people gathered in a park that had been forgotten for years. We brought paint, brushes, and a simple invitation: turn this wall into something that tells your story. Within an hour, the wall was alive with color, with names, with hope.

What struck me most was not the mural itself, but the quiet that fell over the group as they worked. There is something about creating together that softens people. A boy who arrived with his hood up and his eyes down was laughing by the end. A girl who said she “couldn’t draw” painted the most tender flower of the day.

Community art days are not really about the art. They are about remembering that we belong to each other. That restoration happens when we make something together that none of us could have made alone.
